Why Golden Hour Matters for Engagement Photos

Golden hour is often considered the best time of day for engagement photos, and for good reason. The soft, warm light that appears shortly after sunrise and before sunset creates a flattering, natural look that is difficult to replicate at any other time of day. It adds depth, warmth, and dimension while reducing harsh shadows and bright highlights, allowing the focus to stay on the connection between you and your partner. Whether you’re planning your engagement session months in advance or simply wondering why photographers recommend sunset so often, understanding how golden hour affects your images can help you choose the perfect time for photographs that feel timeless, romantic, and authentic.

What Is Golden Hour?

Golden hour is the brief period shortly after sunrise or before sunset when the sun sits lower in the sky, creating some of the most beautiful natural light of the day. Instead of harsh overhead sunlight that produces strong shadows and bright highlights, the light becomes softer, warmer, and more even. This gentle quality of light flatters skin tones, reduces contrast, and wraps subjects in a natural glow that is difficult to recreate at any other time.

For engagement sessions, these lighting conditions make a noticeable difference in the final photographs. The softer light helps create romantic, timeless images while preserving natural colors and avoiding the squinting that often comes with midday sun. It also adds depth and atmosphere to each photograph, allowing landscapes, sunsets, and subtle moments between couples to stand out beautifully.

While golden hour is often associated with dramatic sunsets, its greatest benefit is consistency. The light is forgiving from nearly every direction, giving your photographer more flexibility to explore different locations, experiment with creative compositions, and focus on genuine interactions instead of constantly fighting difficult lighting conditions. The result is a gallery that feels warm, authentic, and effortlessly elegant.

Why We Schedule Around Sunset

Whenever possible, I schedule engagement sessions to end around sunset so we can take full advantage of the most beautiful light of the day. Starting earlier gives us plenty of time to explore multiple locations, ease into the session, and help you feel comfortable in front of the camera before the best light arrives. By the time golden hour begins, you’ll be relaxed, confident, and focused on each other instead of the camera.

Planning the session this way also creates a natural progression throughout your gallery. We can capture a variety of backgrounds, outfits, and moments as the light gradually changes, ending with the warm, glowing portraits that many couples imagine when they think of engagement photos. Rather than rushing to beat the sunset, we allow the evening to unfold naturally, giving us the flexibility to be creative while making the most of every minute of beautiful light.

Even if weather or scheduling means we can’t photograph during a perfect golden hour, this approach gives us the greatest opportunity to create a diverse gallery filled with natural, timeless images that feel relaxed and authentic.

Photographers tip

If possible, plan your engagement session to finish about 30 minutes after sunset. The soft light during this time often creates the most romantic portraits of the entire session.

The difference it makes

Golden Hour

The lower sun creates soft, directional light with warm tones and gentle shadows. This is the easiest and most flattering light for natural, romantic engagement portraits.

Midday Sun

Bright overhead sunlight creates harsh shadows, causes squinting, and often produces uneven lighting. While great photos are still possible, it usually requires finding shade or using more advanced lighting techniques.

When is the best time to schedule engagement photos?

Golden hour, typically the hour leading up to sunset, often provides the most flattering and romantic light for engagement photos. The warm tones, soft shadows, and gentle contrast create images that feel timeless while naturally complementing skin tones and the surrounding landscape. For that reason, it's my preferred time to photograph engagement sessions whenever possible. That said, beautiful engagement photos are absolutely possible at other times of the day. Every location has its own unique lighting opportunities, and with thoughtful planning, we can use open shade, architectural elements, natural surroundings, and creative compositions to produce stunning images regardless of the time. While golden hour offers ideal conditions, great photography is ultimately about understanding light—not simply chasing the sunset.

What should we wear?

Choosing what to wear can have a bigger impact on your engagement photos than many couples expect. Rather than wearing identical outfits, focus on clothing that complements one another through coordinated colors, textures, and overall style. This creates a balanced, cohesive look while allowing each person's personality to shine through naturally. Neutral tones, earthy colors, and soft textures tend to photograph beautifully in almost any location and season. These colors reflect light well, flatter a variety of skin tones, and help create a timeless look that won't feel dated years from now. Layers, subtle patterns, and thoughtfully chosen accessories can also add depth and visual interest without becoming distracting. Most importantly, wear something that feels comfortable and authentic to you. When you feel confident in what you're wearing, it shows in your expressions, posture, and interactions throughout the session. The goal is for your wardrobe to enhance the photographs—not compete with them—so the focus remains on your connection and the story you're telling together.
