Why Golden Hour Matters for Engagement Photos

Golden hour creates soft, warm, flattering light that helps engagement photos feel romantic, natural, and timeless. Here’s why this time of day makes such a difference.

What Is Golden Hour?

Golden hour is the short window of time after sunrise or before sunset when the sun sits lower in the sky. Instead of harsh overhead light, the light becomes softer, warmer, and more flattering.

For engagement sessions, this creates a romantic glow while helping skin tones look natural and smooth. It also gives the images more depth, warmth, and atmosphere.

Golden hour creates warm highlights, soft shadows, and beautiful separation from the background.

Why We Schedule Around Sunset

Whenever possible, I schedule engagement sessions to end around sunset. This gives us the best light of the day while allowing plenty of time to explore different locations and create a variety of images before the sun disappears.

Photographers tip

If possible, plan your engagement session to finish about 30 minutes after sunset. The soft light during this time often creates the most romantic portraits of the entire session.

Golden Hour

The lower sun creates soft, directional light with warm tones and gentle shadows. This is the easiest and most flattering light for natural, romantic engagement portraits.

Midday Sun

Bright overhead sunlight creates harsh shadows, causes squinting, and often produces uneven lighting. While great photos are still possible, it usually requires finding shade or using more advanced lighting techniques.

When is the best time to schedule engagement photos?

Golden hour, about an hour before sunset, usually provides the most flattering light. If your schedule doesn't allow for that, don't worry—beautiful images can be created throughout the day by choosing the right locations and lighting techniques.

What should we wear?

Choose outfits that complement each other rather than matching exactly. Neutral colors, soft textures, and timeless clothing photograph beautifully while keeping the focus on your connection instead of your wardrobe.
